Choosing the Best Gold For Your Skin

There is a lot more to picking out gold jewelry than simply picking a color. There are multiple shades of gold that flatter different skin tones. Here, we’ve broken down the three most popular types of gold, which skin tones they look best on, and how to tell which one is right for you.

One of the most popular types of gold, especially for diamond rings and other diamond-encrusted jewelry, is white gold. White gold is an alloy (a mix of different metals) of gold with a silver-colored metal such as platinum, palladium or nickel. White gold is usually less expensive than both yellow gold and pure platinum. It’s more resistant to scratches than other types of gold. White gold looks best on cool-toned skin with pink or reddish undertones.

Yellow gold is what most people think of when they hear the word gold. Most yellow gold jewelry is still an alloy, since pure, 24-karat gold is often too soft for jewelry. It’s the best gold type for sensitive skin and requires the least amount of maintenance. People with warm, peachy skin tones look best wearing yellow gold.

In recent years, rose gold has increased in popularity. Everything from jewelry to iPhones to headphones is available in various shades of rose gold. It’s an alloy made with gold, silver and copper to give it a rosy hue. Rose gold is the least expensive type listed here, but it is also the most durable because of the copper. Rose gold is very flattering on those with warm skin tones.

So how do you determine your skin tone? The best way to figure it out is to look at the veins on the inside of your wrists and forearms. Veins on cool-skinned people often look blue or purple. Cool undertones are the most common and can be found in skin of all colors. Warm-toned people’s veins often appear green. Warm tones are more commonly found in people with lighter skin colors.

You can also determine your skin’s undertones by what colors look best on you. People with cool skin will look good in blues, while reds look great on warm tones. You can also tell by what shade of white you prefer to wear. Bright whites will be best for cool-toned people. Off-white, eggshell and ivory are most flattering for warm skin.

If you find that your veins are a mix of blue and green, or that you look good in a wide range of colors, you may have neutral toned skin. Your skin will have no obvious red, pink, yellow or olive in it. If you have neutral undertones in your skin, any shade of gold will work well on you.

The most important thing, however, is that you should wear the jewelry you love and that makes you feel your best. Even if the gold doesn’t perfectly match your skin tone, wearing a piece with confidence is the best look you can have.
